About Sheffield City Council
Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England with a population of 540,000 in the city itself and 1.2 million in the wider city-region. Located in South Yorkshire in the North of England, the city is transforming itself from dependency on the heavy industries of iron and steel and of coalmining, into a more“knowledge-based economy”.
One third of the city is in the Peak District National Park.
It has two leading universities and is a market leader in eLearning and is home to the government backed ufi Learn Direct Service, the worlds largest supported e-learning network.
It was Council of the Tear in 2005 and has won the EU Best Practice award on each occasion it has been awarded: for Public Access in 2001, for the world’s largest eVoting application in 2003, and for a “e” partnership utilising a variety of channels in 2005.
It is home to the European Centre for Smartmedia and eInclusion.
Established and growing areas of expertise in the city include business, finance and professional services, advanced manufacturing and materials technology, biomediacal and healthcare technology, creative and digital industries and energy and environmental technology. Companies with strategic operations in the city include HSDC, DLA, Aviva, Irwin Mitchell, Nationwide BS, B Braun, Outokumpu and Polestar.
