About Sheffield City Council

Sheffield City Council is the local government authority for Sheffield, employing over 15,000 staff. Sheffield is located in the South Yorkshire region of England, within the United Kingdom (UK), and is the fourth largest city in England with a population of over half a million. It is England’s greenest city with 150 woodlands, 50 parks, and the only UK city with a National Park within its city boundary.

Sheffield was awarded UK Council of the Year in 2005 and has won the EU Best Practice award on each occasion it has been awarded: for Public Access in 2001; for the world’s largest eVoting application in 2003; and for e-Partnership in 2005.

Sheffield has two universities that together support around 15,000 new graduates per year, many continuing to live in Sheffield post-graduation, to specialise in the expanding business areas of advanced manufacturing and materials technology, and biomedical and healthcare research.

Sheffield has a rich industrial heritage, and a rapidly expanding range of new industries that have located in Sheffield, helping to create a vibrant and diverse knowledge-based economy. The new knowledge-based organisations have helped Sheffield build an international reputation for innovation and quality, across a growing spectrum of business and technology specialism’s, including e-learning, computer games development, advanced materials manufacturing, and sport’s sciences.

Established companies with strategic operations in the city include the HSBC bank, Aviva Insurance, Fujitsu Siemens, Capita, Siemens VAI, and Outokumpu. The most recent major organisation to locate in Sheffield is the Boeing AMRC (Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre).
